A story that crossed my mind.
The sounds of the tyres screeching distracted me from the morning assembly, I craned my neck to see the source of the sound and was shocked that so many black ambassadors and a police jeep parking in front of my school. I suggested my staff take all the kids inside and begin with the classes while I went to tackle the situation to come. A man, red-faced, in a formal suit followed by several men came inside and angrily started shouting at me.
Today is my first day at school. Teaching at Kausalya global school for 4 years: it’s easy to think of my day at school with these little curious minds. They have promoted me as a coordinator and take up my responsibilities at the other branch of the school. The day has finally arrived. Even after so many years of experience with kids, I’m still a nervous wreck for the first day. My mind is swimming with so many doubts. Will the kids like me? Will I be able to bond with them and maintain a peaceful environment here in this new place?
Reaching the place on time, I could not avoid to appreciate this place. It’s a very spacious and colorful house surrounded by plants and trees, an enormous swimming pool with no water since the weather in January is not for swimming. The other corner of the backyard is full of sand pit and a few toys for kids to play. I was pulled back from my thoughts with several men screaming at me.
I calmed my pounding heart and spoke to the man in suit whom I recognized to be an industrialist who’s been in news for various reasons. I politely said, “sir, this is a school and it would frighten kids with so much noise around. Please calm down” The man Mr. Ranjit Bajaj immediately ordered the men to stay out and agreed to come to my cabin and talk. I forwarded my hand and introduced myself as the coordinator of the school. He took my hand and gave a light shake and introduced himself as the father of Abhiram, a 5-year-old kid studying in upper kindergarten (U.K. G). He requested me to call the kid so he could meet the child. This raised alarms in my head. Why would a father come to meet his kid after dropping the kid at school an hour ago I wanted to ask why? But I held my words and sent the attendant to bring the boy from the class.
The two-minute wait seems to never end the hair on my neck raised, I knew this will not end here. Just as I was about to get the kid myself the teacher entered the cabin and greeted Mr. Ranjit. He nodded to Ms. Savita and asked, “where is Abhiram?” Ms. Savita said that the driver has taken the Abhiram just before the Assembly. I could see the rage in Mr. Ranjith’s face. He stands up with so much force that it sends the chair flying to a corner. Ms. Savita and myself are jerked by this action and both of us take a step back. In a fit of rage he points a finger at me and yells, “Is this how you run a school, do you send children with the drivers and maids without the parents permission..? How can you send my child with a stranger.? what if someone kidnaps my child? I am going to seal this school and bring down your reputation.” Saying this, he turned to go out.
I turned pale at this accusation and felt my world crumbling. This can’t happen this is my first day. It was supposed to be the best I have to do something I Can’t let this happen; I gathered courage and said, “Mr. Ranjit, please wait let’s talk and sort this matter like responsible adults. First, let’s find out what happened. Hearing this Mr. Ranjit stopped, I can see him close his eyes for a min and then turn back and pull the chair that fell off the ground and then take his seat.
I looked at Ms. Savita and with a slight nod of my head; she understood what to be done. She took the chair and sat opposite to Mr. Ranjith and started explaining how the driver came and requested to send Abhiram with him and the mother has asked the driver to bring him. Something didn’t sound right and we at school don’t send kids with driver unless the parent gives the written permission or speaks directly for permission. So the teacher call Abhiram’s mother and asked her why would they drop the child in school and take him back immediately? For this she said that they were planning a surprise party today as tomorrow she would go on an official trip and didn’t want to miss her kid’s birthday. She also said that the driver is a reliable person and will bring back the kid in 3 hours.
The teacher sent the child with the driver after approval of a parent and taking the signature and phone number of the driver in the permission register maintained. Hearing this, I was relieved and secretly appreciated Ms. Savita for showing presence of mind and performing her duties well. Mr. Ranjith though, stood rooted to the ground and tensed. I was suspicious that there’s something more to it. I asked Mr. Ranjith what is the problem now, and also that Abhiram is with his mother and we can call her to confirm. I also showed him the register where the driver has entered the details.
Mr. Ranjith made some calls to the commissioner and informed him about the events and also ordered him to track the driver with his number and bring back Abhiram from his mother back to school. It confused me, didn’t know what is happening! Mr. Ranjith, Ms. Savita, and I sat in silence, waiting for Abhiram to arrive. I can see the bead of sweat running down Ms. Savita’s forehead. This silence was killing me, I need to break the silence and find out what is going on!
I placed a glass of water before Mr. Ranjith and said, Sir, “please drink some water, and tell us what is bothering you even after knowing that Abhiram is with his mother”. Mr. Ranjith looked at me, drank some water from the glass I’ve forwarded to him, and spoke. He tells us he and his wife are separated and the divorce is under processing. The court has ordered the kid will stay with father and grand parents till we process the divorce and they decide the child custody.
He also said that one of his collegue saw Abhiram in a car going in the opposite direction from school and that’s when he was suspicious and came to school to check on his son. He also said that Abhiram’s mother is suffering from some mental illness and under medical treatment. Since these were the changes in the past week he could not update the school staff of the restrictions. He apologized for his rude behaviour and also thanked Ms.Savita for her presence of mind recording the details of the person when the child was taken from school. those details helped us in tracking the whereabouts of Abhiram and thus reaching the kid.
With the Father and child meeting My adventurous day has come to an end. I only wanted to go back to my safe place my home. This has become an unforgettable day of my life. Once my head hit the pillow I went into a deep slumber my paradise.
